Abstract: Sir Philip Sidney’s “An Apology for Poetry,” also known as “The Defense of Poesy,” is one of the foundational works of English Renaissance literary criticism. Written in a period when poetry was challenged by moral, religious, and philosophical objections, the treatise argues that poetry is an ancient, imaginative, and morally productive form of knowledge. This paper examines Sidney’s use of the term “apology,” the intellectual and cultural context of the work, and its principal arguments. It summarizes the treatise in four connected parts: the antiquity and dignity of poetry, the nature and kinds of poetic imitation, poetry’s superiority to philosophy and history in moving readers toward virtue, and Sidney’s answers to the major objections against poetry. The paper then evaluates the merits and limitations of Sidney’s criticism. Its merits include the powerful conception of the poet as a maker, the integration of pleasure and instruction, the emphasis on imagination and memory, and the recognition of poetry’s social and political force. Its limitations include the defensive character of its argument, its selective use of Plato and Aristotle, its dependence on historical exempla, and its unresolved tension between pleasure and moral discipline. The study concludes that Sidney remains relevant because he connects literary form with ethical education, political imagination, cultural authority, and the reader’s active response.
