Abstract: Sir Philip Sidney's An Apology for Poetrie (1595) holds a key place in English literary criticism as one of the earliest systematic defenses of poetry during the Renaissance. Written when poetry faced moral, religious, and philosophical critiques, Sidney's work aims to reaffirm the dignity, authority, and value of imaginative literature. He does this through a strong mix of classical rhetoric, Aristotelian ideas about poetry, and Renaissance humanism. This article looks at the rhetorical methods Sidney uses to build poetic authority and to position poetry as an essential tool for moral lessons, intellectual growth, and civic duty. By using rhetorical criticism and humanist literary ideas, the study examines how Sidney draws on classical thinkers such as Aristotle, Horace, and Cicero while also addressing Platonic concerns about the ethics of poetry. Special focus is given to Sidney's view of the poet as a ‘maker.’ He sees the poet's imagination as something that goes beyond the limits of history and philosophy by presenting idealized models of virtue that can inspire ethical behavior. The article also explores the connections between rhetoric, persuasion, and moral education in Sidney's arguments. It shows that his defense goes beyond just literary appreciation to address wider cultural and educational issues in the English Renaissance. Ultimately, the article argues that Sidney's rhetorical defense provides important insights into the lasting connection between literature, imagination, morality, and public discussion, reaffirming the ongoing importance of Renaissance literary theory in today's critical studies.
