Abstract: Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is an essential part of English language teachers’ professional lives because language, learner needs, educational technologies, and pedagogical expectations continue to change. This conceptual paper examines how relational professionalism—the quality of professional relationships through which teachers learn with and from colleagues, mentors, teacher educators, researchers, and wider communities—can strengthen CPD in the Indian context. Drawing on established literature on language teacher development, reflective practice, professional learning, and teacher professional development, the paper discusses the meaning of relational professionalism, the purposes and features of effective CPD, and challenges that may restrict teachers’ participation. It considers self-directed learning, reflective practice, classroom-based inquiry, peer observation, mentoring, professional associations, academic writing, digital learning, and collaborative professional communities. The paper argues that professional development is more likely to be meaningful when it is sustained, relevant to teachers’ subject and context, connected to classroom practice, and supported by collegial relationships rather than limited to one-off workshops. It also relates these principles to India’s National Education Policy 2020, which calls for continuing opportunities for teacher learning and specifies an expectation of at least 50 hours of CPD annually. As a conceptual discussion rather than an empirical study, the paper does not claim to measure the impact of any particular programme. It concludes with practical recommendations for teachers, institutions, and professional development providers.
