Abstract: This article “From Human to Divine: The Transformative Dimensions of Love in Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali” examines love as a dynamic and multidimensional experience that moves progressively from the human and mundane toward the spiritual and divine. Rather than presenting love as a single, fixed emotion, Tagore explores its varied manifestations through affection, innocence, sacrifice, longing, loss, nature, universal compassion and transcendence. The article particularly examines maternal love and the innocence of childhood, highlighting the self-negating and selfless dimensions of a mother’s love. It further explores the presence of the Divine in nature, where the material world becomes a medium through which spiritual love is experienced. The recurring themes of love, loss, separation and longing are examined through Tagore’s representation of the beloved, whose identity remains deliberately ambiguous between a human lover and the Divine. This ambiguity enables the poems to move fluidly between earthly and spiritual registers of love. The article also considers the expansion of personal affection into love for all humanity, suggesting a movement from individual attachment toward universal love and spiritual fellowship. Finally, it examines Tagore’s treatment of death as a transformative experience through which the boundaries between life and eternity are transcended and union with the Divine becomes possible. The study argues that in Gitanjali, love is not merely an emotion but a transformative spiritual force that enables the individual to move from the mundane to the divine, from the self to the universal, and ultimately from separation to transcendental union.
Keywords: Transformative dimensions of love, ambiguous beloved, universal love, death and transcendence, divine union.
