Roles of Students’ Council involvement in Management of Discipline in Public Secondary Schools in Bariadi District Council, Tanzania

Abstract: The study aimed at investigating the influence of students’ council in management of students discipline in public secondary schools in Bariadi District, Tanzania. The study employed mixed research approach with a convergent parallel design. Quantitative data were collected using questionnaires while interview and focus group discussion were methods used to collect qualitative data. The study included 04 heads of secondary schools, 04 discipline teachers, 74 teachers, 40 members of students’ council and 94 students. The quantitative data was descriptively analyzed with the help of SPSS version 20 while thematic analysis was employed in analyzing qualitative data. The study established that students’ council play a significant role in managing students’ discipline through promoting healthier leadership, enforcing school rules and behavior and being role model for positive behavioral change among students. The findings further revealed that students’ council was highly involved in enforcing school rules and regulations while less involved in decision making on disciplinary matters and punishing misbehaving students. The study recommended that government through the ministry of education should make sure that there are policy change to allow school management involve students’ council in making decision basically students discipline in secondary schools.
