Abstract: The culmination of topographical boundaries and human psyche is illuminated through interdisciplinary the concept of ‘mnemonic borderscapes’ The reverberations of the borderscapes are heard in literature that reflect the life and thoughts of human beings. Writers of fiction use the physical landscapes to portray human life and its complexities. The study aims to analyse the presence of mnemonic borderscapes in Thomas Hardy’s fiction, Tess of the d’Urbervilles. It attempts to identify the social distinctions of the Victorian society as a contested space where people compete for power and delineates the depiction of borderscapes as sites of trauma and grief. The study employs narrative inquiry methodology that identifies how mnemonic borderscapes channelise one’s action based on the past memories. The scrutiny of Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles will foster the comprehension of the temporal nature of borderscapes that becoming inexorable components of human life.
